I Tried a Social Media Detox for a Week. Here’s What Actually Happened.

September 29, 2026 0 24

I reached for my phone before I even realised I was reaching for it.

Waiting for the cab? Scroll.
Eating lunch? Scroll.
Five minutes before bed? Scroll.

So I tried something that sounded almost impossible: 7 days without social media.

No Instagram. No endless reels. No “just five minutes.”

Here’s what happened…

DAY 1 — The Urge

The strange part wasn’t missing social media.

It was realising how often I automatically opened it.

Waiting for something. Feeling bored. Taking a break.

My hand would instantly reach for the exact spot on my phone where the Instagram icon used to be.

DAY 2 — The Boredom

Suddenly, a five-minute wait felt like… five minutes.

No scrolling meant there was nothing to fill every tiny gap.

And I started wondering: Have we forgotten how to be bored

DAY 3 — The Extra Time

I didn’t suddenly gain hours.

I found small pockets of time.

10 minutes here. 15 minutes there.

Enough to make breakfast. Take a walk. Read a few pages. Sleep early. Or just do nothing

DAY 4–5 — The Realisation

Without constant scrolling, I started noticing why I usually opened social media.

Bored?

Avoiding something?

Looking for information and then gradually moving on to other apps?

Or just opening it because it had become automatic?

That question changed everything

DAY 6–7 — The Surprise

I realised I didn’t actually want to quit social media. There are things I genuinely enjoy: friends, communities, creativity and inspiration.

What I wanted to quit was mindless scrolling.

The One Rule I’m Keeping

Before opening a social media app, ask: “What did I come here for?”

If you don’t have an answer… Maybe you don’t need to open it

Want to Try Your Own 7-Day Detox?

Here’s how to begin:

  1. Turn off unnecessary notifications and set an app timer.
  2. Don’t scroll while eating or during short waits.
  3. Replace 30 minutes of scrolling with a short walk, yoga, reading or anything more meaningful to you.
A detox doesn’t have to mean leaving social media.

Sometimes, it simply means choosing when, why and how much you use it.
